А few interesting facts about the sunny beautiful Greece money. Surprisingly, Greek currency, drachma, existed 2650 years until the euro came to replace it in 2002. The name of the Greek currency appeared for the first time in the 5th century BC.
It was called drachma for a reason. At that time, money was made of iron with square silver and gold twigs – "obols". A handful of them from six pieces was called "drachma". Translated from the local language it means "handful" or "palm". Therefore, the national currency got its name.
